Is Sound Healing & Sound Therapy Safe?

Sound Healing and Sound Therapy are classified as a Low Risk holistic treatment. As a Sound Practitioner there are certain guidelines I follow as a precaution and as general good practice.

I do not work with:

  • Ladies who are knowingly in the first 3 months of pregnancy.
  • People who have severe mental health conditions such as paranoid schizophrenia, severe personality disorder, psychosis, extreme bi-polar (unmanaged) or if they have disclosed that they have suicidal or murderous thoughts.

I would use caution and may decide not to work with people:

  • Who experience epilepsy or seizures of any kind (unless managed)
  • Who have other conditions that may be triggered by sound, including tinnitus.
  • Who have metal plates, implants (other than tooth fillings), pacemakers or other devices fitted
  • Who have a severe physical condition.

As always if you are unsure about anything, it is best to disclose it and then we can make an informed decision as to whether to proceed. I may request that you obtain a letter from your GP stating that they have no concerns about your participation.

It all sounds a bit ‘woo woo’.

Now I can understand this one. If you’d have told me 5 or 6 years ago (written early 2017) that I would now be working as a full time Sound Therapist I would have been surprised. My previous occupations were very scientific and logical. However, through direct personal experience, I have seen the power of Therapeutic Sound on myself and others.

After much research, I decided to study with The British Academy of Sound Therapy due to their evidence based and researched led approach to developing treatments and methodologies.

Each Sound Practitioner will have their own ‘style’. My approach is very practical and down to earth with very little ‘theatre’ or ‘performance’.  One of my aims is to practice Sound Therapy in a way that integrates with mainstream medical and care services, and is open to everyone.

Many clients are unsure what to expect at first but are soon won over by the experience and benefits they observe.

Gong and The Zodiac

I am not musical, I have no rhythm, I don’t do Yoga or Meditate, I don’t do Holistic Treatments or Alternative Medicine.

That’s fine. Most of the treatments are passive, so you don’t need any special skills or previous experience. Our methods draw from many different cultures and belief systems and you won’t be asked to do anything that you are not comfortable with.

What’s all this talk of Soulshine?

Whatever we call it, we all have that something at our very core. That something deep inside that when you are down feels empty and drained. But when you feel great fills you with energy, joy, strength, love, positivity, action. That is what I call Soulshine.

I think of my Soulshine as the outward connection and expression of my soul with everything else. The universe, nature (it’s easy to forget that we ARE nature), with life force energy. Depending on your belief system you may think in terms of God, or another divine entity, or creator. You may call it Love, Light, Chi, Spirit, Holy Spirit, Consciousness, Prana, something else completely or nothing at all. It doesn’t matter, Sound Therapy will work for any belief system.

Altered States of Consciousness sounds scary … do you mess with my head?

We naturally move through different levels of consciousness throughout the day. I use Therapeutic Sounds to help us to achieve a certain brainwave state, depending on the aim of that session. You may wish to feel more energised and alert, or more restful and relaxed. We will use different instruments and techniques to help you achieve the desired outcome.

Sound bath, on body technique, do I need to take my clothes off?

No. None of our methods require removal of clothing. We describe the session as a Sound Bath because participants are ‘bathed’ or ‘immersed’ in sound vibrations. The on body technique works through clothing and clients are normally covered by a blanket.

Are you a Healer?

I believe we all have natural powers to heal ourselves, be that physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually. I use Therapeutic Sound to create an environment where you can do your own healing. I use client centred and heart based reflection techniques to help you to develop a richer understanding of yourself, your health and your well-being. I have observed that many people experience relief from the symptoms of physical conditions.

What’s the best way to start?

Normally, I would recommend trying a Gong Relaxation Sound Bath. This is a good introduction to Sound Healing. The gongs and other instruments are played gently to lull you into a deep, restorative, relaxation. It also gives us an opportunity to meet and chat to see if you would like to work with me. Gong Baths are group events. If you would like to discuss a 1 to 1 Introduction to Sound Healing then please contact me to discuss.

Note: Not all Gong sessions are relaxing. A Gong Bath can be very intense depending on the aims of the session and the practitioner. If it’s your first Gong Treatment make sure you know what type of session you are taking part in.

I run regular Gong Relaxation Sessions. Click below for further details.

I hope that’s answered a few questions for you. If you want to know more, then please get in touch.
